| The
Problem |
 |
In
recent years Canada geese have become an urban nuisance and left unchecked,
the numbers of Canada geese will double every five years. The resident
Canada goose does not migrate, has overgrazed lawns and recreational areas,
leaves behind 1 2 lbs of waste per bird per day, and is
aggressive towards humans during nesting season. |
|
Goose feces damage property, compromise overall "quality of life",
and have the potential to pose serious health threats due to the presence
of disease-causing organisms.
|
|
Geese are
extremely bold and intelligent creatures. It is almost impossible to frighten
them with conventional methods. After a short while the geese become accustomed
to the presence of "artificial repellents" such as swans, floating
gator heads, hanging plastic "eye" balls, fencing around ponds,
and other such props and are not frightened by them.
|
|
|
In some cases geese will even share ponds with swans (the real ones).
Killing or injuring the birds is not an option as they are considered
migratory game birds and are protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act
and other Federal and State laws.
So what can you do when your property
becomes over run with foraging Canada geese?

| The
Solution |
 |
Federal Goose Control, Inc. after many years
of experience and research has developed a truly integrated and humane
program for control and management of Canada Geese. Our program incorporates
the use of trained Border Collies and handlers,
Goose Chaser II to control geese on
water and the application of repellents
on what we deem "Hot Spots". |
It is proven time and again that properly trained
Border Collies are one of the most effective goose deterrents available
today.
|
|
Our Border Collies and handlers are
highly trained to work with each other without harming geese. They consistently
but gently, nudge geese into flight without causing them any harm or mental
stress. Our use of Border Collies are key to this program and have made
our integrated approach extremely successful in managing and controlling
the geese population on our clients sites.
|
 |
| Basically,
our program is deployed in two stages. Initially we apply an intense effort
of harassment to force the geese to change their habits and into believing
the property is an unsafe area.
A Handler and Border
Collie will visit the property daily at multiple times harassing any geese
on site into leaving. Depending on the magnitude of the problem, multiple
Border Collies may be used. During this period the geese will alter their
feeding times trying to avoid the harassment. Eventually, after persistent
harassment by the Border Collies the geese
learn that those areas are unsafe and will move elsewhere. Stage two is
a follow up maintenance program of daily visits at random times. |
 |
Our experience tells us that daily visits to your property
at random times will deter those geese from returning as well as any new
geese from taking up residency. This is especially true during mating
season. Each year geese return to their place of birth or to areas
where they have previously nested.
|
| This process begins in February
with mating, nesting in April, goslings appear in May, adults begin molting
in June and will remain unable to fly until August.

Border Collies
|
| All of our dogs are professionally
trained purebred Border
Collies. This breed of dog is extremely intelligent, is hardworking
and possesses a natural instinct to herd. Other
breeds have kill or
retrieve instincts and are not
satisfied until they capture and return their prey. The geese perceive
the Border Collie as a natural predator seeing them as a coyote or fox.
Other breeds are not perceived as predatory.
Each of our dogs
go through months of training at Goose
U. before coming to work at F.G.I.
The training program starts with basic commands, stay, lie down, come,
and progresses up to working with sheep and then on to training with Indian
runner ducks and African geese. |
 |
| |
 |
The dogs are also
trained not to injure or harm the geese. This is important, especially
during breeding and molting season when the adults and goslings are unable
to fly and in general, any time the dog may come across a goose thats
injured or unable to fly. Our dogs are the best trained Border Collies
in the business and will not touch or harm the geese. |

Watercraft |
| The Goose
Chaser II
is a remote controlled watercraft that was specially
designed to chase geese from larger ponds, lakes and other waterways.
The design is modeled after the Florida everglades air boats, has no discharge
or moving parts in the water and is environmentally safe.

Repellents
FlightControl®
is a nontoxic chemical deterrent, that when properly applied, discourage
geese from eating grass, limiting the areas on which geese will feed.
It is environmentally safe and has no effect on plants, mammals or fish.
The geese learn that eating the treated grass upsets them. FlightControl®
has an ingredient that marks the grass so that the geese learn to associate
the marked grass as a bad food source.
